Electrolysis

Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal method that uses a fine sterile probe to deliver a controlled electrical current into individual hair follicles. The energy disables the follicle’s ability to produce new hair, allowing treated hairs to be removed and preventing future growth.

How does it work?

Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal treatment that destroys the hair follicle so it can no longer produce hair. A trained provider uses a very fine sterile probe placed into the natural opening of each hair follicle and delivers a controlled electrical current. Each hair is treated individually, which makes electrolysis precise and effective for all hair colors and skin types, but it also means multiple sessions are typically needed because hair grows in cycles.

What's The Process?

Book an Appointment
1

Consultation and Treatment Planning

The provider reviews health history, medications, skin sensitivity, and the areas you want treated. They explain expected results, how many sessions are typically needed, and pre-care guidance (for example, hydration and avoiding certain skin products). A plan is set for treatment frequency based on the area and hair growth patterns.

2

Skin Prep and Sanitation

The treatment area is cleansed and sanitized, and sterile instruments are prepared. Depending on the area and sensitivity, a topical numbing option may be used. The provider positions you comfortably and may mark the area to keep coverage consistent.

3

Follicle Treatment and Hair Removal

A fine probe is inserted into the follicle opening (not puncturing the skin). The provider applies a brief electrical current to target the follicle’s growth center. The treated hair is then gently lifted out with sterile tweezers. This is repeated hair-by-hair across the treatment area.

4

Follicle Treatment and Hair Removal

The skin may be temporarily red, warm, or slightly swollen. A soothing product may be applied, and you’ll receive aftercare instructions such as keeping the area clean, avoiding touching/picking, and limiting heat, heavy sweating, sun exposure, exfoliation, and irritating products for 24–48 hours. Follow-up sessions are scheduled to treat new hairs as they enter the active growth phase.

Electrolysis FAQs

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method of permanent hair removal. It destroys the hair growth cells individually using a tiny probe.

Is electrolysis permanent?

Yes. Once a hair follicle is successfully treated and destroyed, that hair will not grow back.

How long does an appointment take?

Electrolysis varies widely based on area and density, usually 15–60+ minutes.
Lash extensions: full sets commonly take 1.5–3 hours; fills typically take 45–90 minutes.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on the area treated, hair type, hormones, and previous hair removal methods. Most clients need multiple treatments over time to target all hair growth cycles.

Does electrolysis hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as a brief pinch or heat. Sensitivity varies by person and treatment area.

Can I shave between appointments?

Yes, shaving is allowed. However, avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, or epilating, as these methods remove the hair root needed for treatment.

Is electrolysis safe for all skin and hair types?

Yes. Unlike laser hair removal, electrolysis works on all skin tones and all hair colors, including blonde, gray, red, and white hair.

What areas can be treated?

Almost any area of the body can be treated, including the face, eyebrows, upper lip, chin, underarms, bikini line, legs, and more.

Can electrolysis cause scarring?

When performed correctly and with proper aftercare, scarring is extremely rare.

What should I do after my treatment?

Keep the area clean, avoid touching it unnecessarily, avoid excessive heat, sun exposure, and intense exercise for 24–48 hours.

What is the difference between electrolysis and laser hair removal?

Laser reduces hair growth and works best on dark hair. Electrolysis permanently destroys individual hair follicles and works on all hair and skin types.

Can I take a long break between treatments?

Yes. Any hairs that have already been permanently treated will not return. A break may slow overall progress, but it does not undo the results already achieved.

Why do I still see hair after my first treatment?

Hair grows in different cycles. Electrolysis can only treat hairs that are actively growing, so multiple sessions are needed to target all follicles.

Is electrolysis suitable for hormonal hair growth?

Yes. Electrolysis is often used for facial hair and other areas affected by hormonal changes. However, new follicles may become active over time due to hormones, requiring occasional maintenance.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Please allow the hair to grow long enough to be visible and easily grasped with tweezers. Avoid waxing or tweezing before your appointment.

Is electrolysis worth it?

If you’re looking for true permanent hair removal, electrolysis is the most effective long-term solution available.
